The Strength Found in Every Journey

Travel has a way of peeling back our layers, exposing who we are when we strip away the comforts of routine and the illusion of control. It forces us to confront our fears, stretch our limits, and discover the depths of our own resilience.

I’ve always believed that travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about transformation. Each journey asks something of us. It tests our adaptability, our patience, and sometimes, our willingness to trust ourselves in the unknown.

A Lesson in Strength from the Costa Rican Rainforest

One of my most profound lessons in strength happened deep in the lush rainforest of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I had agreed to go on a hike with a group of younger, fitter travelers. The moment I saw the rugged trail ahead, doubt crept in. What if I can’t keep up? What if I slow everyone down? That little voice in my head urged me to stay behind, to let them go on without me.

But I didn’t listen.

Step by step, I pushed forward through the thick, humid air, my breath heavy, my muscles straining. Every time I wanted to stop, I reminded myself why I came in the first place—to experience. And that experience turned out to be magical. After what felt like miles of uphill climbing, we reached a hidden waterfall, cascading into a brilliant blue river. The cool water wrapped around me like a reward for my persistence. I stood there, soaking in the moment, knowing that if I had given in to my fears, I would have missed this beauty entirely (and the screaming every time I bent my legs during the next few days!).

Strength doesn’t come from being the fastest or the strongest. It comes from saying yes, even when we’re unsure. It comes from trusting that we can—and then proving it to ourselves.

Solo in Europe: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Another moment of transformation came a few years ago when I set off on a solo journey from Barcelona to Rome, with a ferry ride back to Barcelona. Unlike my usual trips, I had booked no trains, no accommodations—just a general idea of where I wanted to go. My Spanish, French, and Italian were all beginner-level at best, and I knew I was in for a challenge.

And oh, did the challenges come.

There were moments of triumph, like figuring out train schedules and navigating unfamiliar cities without a plan. And then there were moments of pure panic.

I remember arriving at the port in Barcelona after my ferry ride back from Italy, expecting to find taxis lined up, ready to take travelers into the city. There were none. Not a single one. I started walking, suitcase rolling loudly behind me, feeling my energy drain with each block. Was I going the right way? Would I even find a taxi? The exhaustion crept in, but so did determination. After what felt like an eternity, I finally spotted one, climbed in, and exhaled in relief as I made it to my hotel near the train station—where I’d catch my flight home the next morning.

And then there was that small train station in northern Italy.

I had barely eaten all day, and all I wanted was a simple sandwich and a coffee. But the deli was crowded, and I didn’t understand how to navigate the ordering process. I hesitated, then fumbled with my terrible Italian, trying to ask for what I wanted. Instead of being met with patience, the woman behind the counter scolded me—loudly. I felt every eye in the store on me, my face flushing as she made it clear that I was in the way. I wanted to disappear.

But I didn’t.

I stood there, took a breath, and tried again. Eventually, I walked out with my sandwich and coffee, my pride bruised but my resolve strengthened. I had stumbled, but I had done it.

That trip wasn’t perfect. There were missteps, frustrations, and moments when I wanted to cry from exhaustion. But it was also the most free I had felt in a long time. There was no one to lean on but myself. And I realized that was enough.

What Travel Teaches Us About Life

Every journey teaches us something new—not just about the world, but about ourselves.

We learn that fear doesn’t have to stop us. That uncertainty doesn’t mean we should turn back. That even in moments of discomfort, we can find confidence, resilience, and a deeper sense of self.

The same is true in life. We can prepare, plan, and perfect our words, but in the end, it’s our willingness to experience—without overcomplicating, without holding back—that leads to growth.

So, where have your travels taken you? And more importantly, what have they revealed about you?
